Children’s Choir of Chico Announces Upcoming Retirement of Artistic Director Susan Tevis

Chico, Calif. – January 17, 2019 – Children’s Choir of Chico, a local 501(c)3 dedicated to uniting the purity of children’s voices with excellence of choral music education and artistic performance, announced today that Artistic Director Susan Tevis will be retiring effective May 2019.

Tevis will continue leading Children’s Choir through the end of their 2018-2019 season, while helping to transition her responsibilities to a successor to be identified by the Board of Directors.

After co-founding Children’s Choir in 2001, Tevis led the Choir for 18 seasons in its service to over 1000 children, young people and women in the greater Chico area, performing for numerous organizations and community events each year. Children’s Choir is comprised of five individual age-oriented performance groups, ranging from kindergarten to an adult women’s choir.

“Susan is an invaluable part of Children’s Choir of Chico, guiding it through so many years of successful education and performance with the youth of our community,” said Board of Directors President Barbara Burkett. “On behalf of the board, the students, the volunteers, and the community, we extend our great thanks and excitement for her as she embarks on this new phase of life.”

With bachelor and master’s degrees in piano pedagogy and music education from California State University, Chico, Tevis has had a long and storied career as a music educator and vocal performance conductor. Prior to the creation of the Choir, Tevis served as an adjunct faculty member at McNeese State University, CSU Chico, Capital University Conservatory of Music, and the Kodaly Pedagogical Institute in Kecskemét, Hungary. In addition to her role as Artistic Director of Children’s Choir, Tevis taught for many years across the elementary, middle school and high school music programs in Michigan, Louisiana, and California.

“It is with such deep appreciation for Chico and our surrounding communities that I announce my retirement, knowing that their continued support will bolster the work of Children’s Choir of Chico for years to come,” said Tevis. “I am excited for this new chapter in the development of Children’s Choir.”

The Board of Directors of the Choir will shortly be opening the application process to review qualified candidates for the role of Artistic Director. For more information on joining or supporting Children’s Choir of Chico, please visit
