Choir Handbook

Choir Handbook

Dear Choir Members and Parents,

Congratulations and welcome to the Children’s Choir of Chico! I hope that you will be a faithful and enthusiastic member of these outstanding ensembles of musicians and that you will have a productive year of musical growth and performance.  This handbook is created for the purpose of providing a lasting source of information for the 2007-2008 Choir season.  Hopefully this handbook also contains the information that you need to make your participation in the Children’s Choir of Chico enjoyable and rewarding. Please read the handbook, noting information including Choir Calendar, Performance Uniforms, Tuition and Scholarships, Extra Rehearsals, Spring Tours, and Statement of Commitment

I presume that members of the Children’s Choir of Chico expect it to be the best! Consequently, they are challenged to grow musically and vocally to their greatest potential. Members are expected to show RESPECT for their fellow members, the music they perform, their director, and the work that must be done to make our choirs perform at their highest possible level of achievement. Members are also expected to show RESPONSIBILITY for their individual contribution by trying their best at all rehearsals and performances. On the other hand, members who do fulfill the expectations will be REWARDED with an experience unlike any other — encompassing pride, joy, feelings of accomplishment, success, fun, and self-satisfaction! 2007-2008 will be an exciting year for our choirs. Let’s work together to make the Children’s Choir of Chico the best it can be!

Sincerely,

Susan Tevis ~ Conducor and Artistic Director

Mission Statement

back_to_top

“A child is the most susceptible and the most enthusiastic audience for pure art; artistry is something felt by youth’s congenial spirit.”

~ Zoltán Kodály

Children’s Choir of Chico is hosted by California State University, Chico School of the Arts.  Its purpose is to serve the children in the greater Chico area by providing stimulating and challenging choral music education of the highest artistic standards through choral performance.  With this focus, the Choir hopes to accomplish the following goals:

  1. To achieve the highest level of artistic excellence necessary to perform a variety of choral works in a variety of settings.
  2. To ensure that all choir members gain knowledge and demonstrate literacy in musical concepts and vocal skills.
  3. To foster an environment in which each singer can experience the joy of singing, develop confidence, and gain a sense of being a vital part of a musical team.
  4. To provide access to the choir for all children from all cultural and economic backgrounds.
  5. To assist area music educators by providing an additional opportunity for their students to participate, learn, and grow in their music experiences.
  6. To serve as a model of choral literature and vocal training, and as an advocacy group for music education in the community.
  7. To contribute to the cultural life of our community and the surrounding area.

The Kodály Concept

back_to_top

Who was Kodály?

Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) - Hungarian composer, philosopher, scholar, educator, and ethnomusicologist.

What is the “Kodály Concept”? (Lois Choksy)

A comprehensive system of music education, developed in Hungary in the 1940s & 1950s by Kodály, his colleagues, and his students. The “concept” was not invented by Kodály, but rather “evolved in the Hungarian schools under his inspiration and guidance. The goals, the philosophy, and the principles were Kodály’s. The pedagogy, the means through which to achieve these goals, was not.”

  • Solfa – Italy (do, re, mi…)
  • Tonic solfa – England
  • Rhythm syllables – France (ta, ti-ti, tiri-tiri)
  • Solfa techniques – Jaques-Dalcroze
  • Hand-signs – adaptation from Curwen – England
  • Teaching process – Pestalozzi

“The greatest deficiency in our culture is that it is built from above…We put up fancy spires first. When we saw that the whole edifice was shaky, we set to building the walls.  We have still to make the cellar…. If in 1875 instead of establishing the Academy of Music, we had laid the foundations for the teaching of singing in schools, today’s musical culture would be greater… As though a university was founded in a country that had not even any primary schools.”

 (Kodály “Music in the Kindergarten”)

So, what is the Kodály philosophy?

The Kodály approach is a dynamic, exciting way of teaching and learning, based on the developmental readiness of the child. The process involves a sequential layering of skills and concepts designed to build success for every child.  Understanding of rhythm develops through use of movement activities and rhythmic syllables; melodic and harmonic understanding develops through the use of solfege syllables (do, re, mi…) in the movable “do” system, interval training, and hand signs. The process begins with singing games and leads to instrument playing, improvising, composing and arranging, reading and notation, analyzing, and evaluating. Comprehensive music literacy, leading to great art music, is the ultimate goal.

“Only the best is good enough for children.”

What is the underlying philosophy? (Lois Choksy)
  1. All people capable of linguistic literacy are also capable of musical literacy
  2. Singing is the best foundation for musicianship
  3. Music education, to be most effective, must begin with the very young child
  4. The folk songs of a child’s own linguistic heritage constitute a musical “mother tongue” and should therefore be the vehicle for early instruction
  5. Only music of the highest artistic value, both folk and composed, should be used in teaching
  6. Music should be at the heart of the curriculum, a core subject, used as a basis for education

“Singing is the instinctive language of the child, and the younger he is, the more he requires movement to go with it.”

What are the principal objectives of Kodály musical training?
  1. To develop to the fullest extent possible the innate musicality present in all children
  2. To make the language of music known to all children; to help them become musically literate in the fullest sense of the word – able to read, write, and create with the vocabulary of music
  3. To make the children’s musical heritage – the folk songs of their language and culture – known to them
To make available to children the great art music of the world, so that through performing, listening, studying, and analyzing masterworks they will come to a love and appreciation of music based on knowledge about music.

The Choirs

back_to_top

Ready, Set, Sing! (Kindergarten & 1st Grade)

Moving, playing and singing – the perfect way for 1st graders to learn! Our lively music classes will enable children to find their singing voice and experience the basic elements of music through their best learning medium – play! These active music makers will have a number of opportunities to perform locally and with the other Choirs during the year.

Preparatory Choir Levels I & II (Grades 2 & 3)

This music experience is designed for active 2nd and 3rd graders. These students play their way to tuneful singing, beautiful music, and music literacy through age-appropriate folk songs, singing games, and music activities in small classes. The Preparatory Choir will also rehearse choral literature together (Levels I & II) and perform locally and with the other Choirs throughout the year.

Cantiamo (Grades 4 & up)

The Cantiamo is a non-auditioned choir for students in grades 4 and up. Rehearsals once a week provide opportunities for learning proper vocal production, increasing music-reading skills, and participating in music activities to enhance choral development. The performance repertoire will include works in various languages, eras of music composition, cultures, and styles. Numerous performance opportunities and frequent collaborations with the Bel Canto will provide Cantiamo members with additional experiences for varied and exciting music.  Cantiamo makes a 1-2 day tour each year. Additionally, members of the Cantiamo who have been in an ensemble of the Children’s Choir of Chico for 1 year may audition for the National Choirs of the Organization of American Kodály Educators.

Bel Canto (Grades 6 & up)

Bel Canto, an auditioned choir, focuses on a more complex level of musical structures, texts, languages, and compositions. Their choral works, requiring a higher level of vocal experience, will represent numerous sophisticated styles and cultures, emphasizing the development of musical skills and knowledge introduced and reinforced in the Cantiamo. As the premier touring choir of the Children’s Choir of Chico, members of the Chorale are committed to a higher level of involvement. They rehearse twice a week to attain these goals and may have additional performances depending on invitations and availability. Bel Canto takes a multi-day tour each year. Additionally, members of Bel Canto who have been in an ensemble of the Children’s Choir of Chico for one year may audition for the National Choirs of the Organization of American Kodály Educators.

Bella Voce (Women's Ensemble - High School & up)

Bella Voce is open to women of all ages and musical abilities in the community. The only requirement is enjoyment of musical camaraderie! Rich musical selections will include art music, folk song arrangements from around the world, spirituals, and selections from musicals. Bella Voce has many opportunities to perform locally and may choose to undertake a tour.

Attendance

Because we have an active concert season it is essential that we use every minute wisely. Please plan for Choir Members to:

  1. BE ON TIME for rehearsals. "On time" means arriving 10 minutes before the rehearsal begins. Promptness is essential to teamwork. We can only work together when we are all here!
  2. SIGN-IN and be in your seat 5 minutes before rehearsal begins (Cantiamo & Bel Canto).
  3. BRING all music to each rehearsal. Students are responsible for the music in their folder. Choir Members will pay for any music that is lost or damaged.
  4. HAVE a snack before you arrive for rehearsal.
  5. USE restrooms and get drinks of water before rehearsal, as there is not sufficient time for all Choir Members to use restrooms during the rehearsal.
  6. Chewing gum, eating, and drinking are not allowed in the rehearsal room. A closed container of water is permitted.

Our goals for the year include self-improvement as musicians and public performances in which we can share our musical progress. To share beautiful music is a privilege, an honor and a responsibility. A look at our calendar shows that we will have many opportunities to perform.  Choir members are expected to actively participate in rehearsals, as a significant amount of material is covered at each rehearsal. Concerts are the outcome of our rehearsals and the culmination of our musical gift to our audiences. Because we are a TEAM, important musical factors such as balance and blend are affected by the absence of even a single performer! When you join a musical group, members accept the responsibility to be at rehearsals and as many concerts as possible.

Keeping in mind that COMMUNICATION between parents, teacher, and student is a prerequisite to success in music, please do the following:

  1. Together, look carefully over the calendar now.  Note the dates of concerts, special rehearsals, and events.
  2. Write appropriate dates on your family calendar now!  Keep the full calendar handy as a reference.  Use the Response Form attached to the Concert Choir and Chorale Calendar to indicate your child’s attendance at extra rehearsals and/or performances.
  3. In case of illness preventing attendance at a rehearsal, please call or e-mail the Children’s Choir of Chico Office before the rehearsal.
  4. Students missing more than 2 rehearsals in a concert cycle may be asked to demonstrate knowledge and musical memory for the Director.
  5. Students with colds and sore throats are asked to attend the rehearsal (unless they are absent from school or are contagious) and will sit in the audience, participating passively in the rehearsal.

We all appreciate your efforts to schedule dental, orthodontic, medical (etc.) appointments at other times.  Our rehearsals seem so short and full; therefore, choir members will want to miss only those days when they are absent from school.

To contact the Children’s Choir of Chico with an absence please phone or e-mail: (530) 342-2775) childrenschoir@pacbell.net

All Choirs

For safety reasons, choristers are not permitted to leave the rehearsal building until a parent or other authorized adult has come for them. Communication

back_to_top

Choir newsletters are sent home with Choir Members from rehearsals on a regular basis.  These newsletters will remind you of upcoming rehearsal changes, performances, special projects, new performance proposals, etc. It is essential that Choir Members and parents read these newsletters carefully.  Communicating in this manner saves a significant amount of postage costs. Students who are absent from a rehearsal will receive the newsletter in the mail.  After each rehearsal, please ask your child if a newsletter was given out.

Fundraising
back_to_top

All members of the Children’s Choir of Chico and their families participate in fundraising efforts to partially alleviate the deficit between tuition paid and the cost of running the choirs.  The Parent Board works diligently to keep fundraising to a minimum and asks that each family participate in the following ways:
  1. Donate a $10 gift item for Bunko and sell 4 Bunko tickets
  2. Sell tickets and help to solicit auction items for April in Paris Dinner and Auctions Provide baked goods, soft drinks, or etc. for at least one of the major fundraisers
  3. Volunteer to serve on a committee or help with setup, clean up, etc. for Bunko or April in Paris
  4. Distribute at least 5 donation packets to family and friends who may be interested in becoming Choir supporters. Each choir family is encouraged to generate $100 in donations.
Personal fundraisers will be planned and organized by the Parent Board and Parent Volunteers to help choir members earn funds for choir tours. Monies collected during fundraisers that are specified as “personal” will go into the account of the member to be applied to the cost of his/her tour. All other fundraising projects benefit the CCOC Operating Fund.  Fundraising Facts
  • Our signature event, “Let Your Spirit Sing!” held in 2006 raised over $11,000
  • In the 2005-2006 choir year, choir families raised just under $10,000 in donations
  • If each choir family sold four Bunko tickets ($15 ea.) CCOC would raise over $5,000
  • If each choir family solicited five people for a $25 donation, CCOC would raise over $10,000

Frivolous Friday Rehearsals

back_to_top

Cantiamo and Bel Canto

You will notice that the Choir Calendar includes several Friday evening rehearsals and pizza parties.  Our regular rehearsals are scheduled to provide weekly opportunities to learn our music.  One way to gain some additional rehearsal time prior to a concert is by having these concentrated Friday rehearsals, and we enjoy these opportunities to perfect our music, play games, and eat pizza together!  Parents will be asked to assist and to provide goodies for some of these rehearsals. Please help us by planning ahead and making these rehearsals a priority.

OAKE Choirs

back_to_top

Choristers who have been a member of the Children’s Choir of Chico for one year are invited to audition for the 2007 National Children’s Choir, National Youth Choir, and National Concert Choir of the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE).  These prestigious choirs will rehearse with internationally renowned conductors in conjunction with the OAKE 2007 National Conference, March 21-25 in Chicago, IlO

ne of the most exciting events of the Conference is always the concert by the Conference Choirs (Children’s, Youth, and Concert), which will occur on Saturday, March 24 2007.

The purpose of these choirs is to present an opportunity for the finest young voices in America, who are trained to sing in choirs by Kodály inspired music teachers, to perform outstanding choral repertoire under the direction of a world class conductor.

Spring Tour

back_to_top

The Cantiamo and Bel Canto plan to take a Concert Tour each year. Choir members whose tuition accounts are paid in full are eligible to participate in these tours. The date, length of time and location for the Concert Tours will change depending on choral festivals, performances, and events that become possibilities for our participation.

These additional performance opportunities are extremely valuable for the overall development of individual choir members and the choir program as a whole. Our tours usually also include opportunities for CCOC members to hear other choirs, thereby increasing their musical experience base. Of course, a fun event is always included, as a group that plays together will sing better together!

There will be additional costs for this trip to cover buses, meals, hotel, fun events, etc. It is the responsibility of individual choristers’ families to pay for their part in the trip. The Board of Directors and Parent Volunteers will plan individual fundraising events for personal tour accounts so that all students will have the opportunity to participate in this unique event. Of course, we will also need some wonderful, patient chaperones!  More about this later!

Performance Proposals

back_to_top

During the Choir season, after the planning of our Calendar, we will be invited to sing at a variety of events in our community. After being researched and considered by the Children’s Choir of Chico Conductor, Staff, and Board of Directors, a Performance Proposal will be sent home with choir members.  Each proposal will indicate specific information and a time line for a response.  If a minimum number of students are able to commit to the performance, considering balance between and among the Choir’s sections, then the performance will be accepted and added to our calendar.
